After spending several years bedridden due to severe vulvar pain, struggling to find treatments to relieve the pain, and searching for support for the emotional consequences of my disrupted life, I knew I had to take action. I began advocating for patient support, community awareness of vulvodynia and similar pelvic pain conditions, and better education, especially for the medical professions.
Vulvodynia is a persistent chronic pain condition, which affects women in every age group, including adolescents. Although it is a common condition, affecting 1 in 4 women, it is frequently misdiagnosed and poorly understood by the majority of health care providers.
